Sock Dying Class

Mustard Seed Dreams was a busy place on Saturday, August 8th. A group led by June Shepperd learned how to dye sock blanks in the back part of the store. We were all very excited with the results of our dying adventure. Thanks to June and Larry for a great class!

June was determined that we would have a good time and we did! First, we needed a sock blank. This is a pre-knitted rectangle with enough yarn to make a sock.

The blanks were soaked in vinegar and warm water for several minutes. The sock blank was then layed out on a piece of plastic wrap.

Dye was then applied with squirt bottles. It was easy! The dye was patted into the knit to make sure it went through both layers. Plastic wrap covered the entire sock blank and it was rolled up like a jelly roll.

The wrapped up sock blank was then put in the microwave for several minutes to set the color. Notice the rolled up blank waiting to be "cooked." Being careful not to burn our fingers, we unwrapped the sock blank so that we could get rid of excess water and allow the blank to cool for a few minutes.

After the cooling period was over, the sock blanks were rinsed thoroughly and put in a plastic bag for the trip home. After the blank is dry, the next step is to knit it into a gorgeous pair of socks. These are a few examples of socks made from dyed sock blanks.
